Story Writing Tips and Tools

The hardest part about writing a story, is knowing where to begin and also thinking of the ideas. Hopefully some of the resources in this folder will be a useful in supporting the children undertaking independent writing.

A simple formula to use for writing stories of WHO?, WHAT? and WHY NOT? can be applied to any genre, whether it be an action story, adventure, fantasy, or fairytale.

Similarly, the acronym S.C.O.O.P is another useful strategy to use in the planning stage as the children begin to think about their story and map them out before writing.

Setting - Tells WHEN and WHERE

Character - WHO is in the story?

Oh no!  - What is the PROBLEM?

Order - Tell the story IN ORDER.

Problem Solved - How is the problem solved or fixed?
