Term 5: Sound

  • Children should explore and identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating (musical instruments)
  • recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear
  • find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it; find out how the pitch and volume of sounds can be changed in a variety of ways
  • find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it
  • recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases.

Week 1

What do you already know about sound?

Create a mind map like the one above to show what you already know about sound. Use the prompt questions to support you.

Make your own musical instrument

Use the website links below to explore different musical instruments that you could make using materials you have at home. You might decide to create your own original instrument, but whatever you do, make your instrument is as bright and colourful as you can. Who knows...we might be able to start our own Cedar class band when we're back at school!
