Alder

Welcome to Alder Class

We are a class of Year 5 children and our teacher is Mrs Carter.

Term 4

We have had a fantastic start to our new term!

The children visited the Science Fair at Sevenoaks School to take part in a presentation about water. Year 5 were full of excitement and enthusiasm, even when we were splashed a few times in our front row seats!

Year 5 played a key role in the launch of our new school values. Activity stations were set up in the hall for all the children to enjoy, and Alder Class were responsible for introducing each value to the younger children and explaining how to tackle the activity challenges. The Year 5 children worked incredibly hard over two days and staff across the school commented on their skill and maturity. Congratulations to all of Alder Class on being such fantastic role models!

Alder Class brought in their favourite books for World Book Day and had one minute to convince the rest of the class that their book should be their next reading choice. It was a closely-fought contest, but the overall winner was Mortal Engines, by Philip Reeves. A big well done to Joseph for his brilliant persuasive speech!

Coinciding with World Book Day was our cookery workshop with Roots to Food. The children thoroughly enjoyed preparing and cooking their delicious curry, even in their World Book Day pyjama costumes!

A Child's War

Our exciting new topic looks at World War 2 from the perspective of children. Year 5 and 6 children imagined they were going to be evacuated and came to school dressed up in 1940s clothing. They each brought a box containing the items they would choose to take with them if they were leaving home and shared their evacuee boxes with the class. It was a wonderful chance to empathise with the experiences of children from 80 years ago and proved a great way to dive into our learning.

We have linked our topic into our English work too, with our new text Goodnight Mr Tom providing a fascinating insight into the life of an evacuee. Alder Class are very interested in learning about this key moment in modern history and have already been researching the topic in their own time. Look on your home learning grid for some great ideas!

One of our class brought in a genuine soldier's helmet dating from 1941 to show the other children. It was a wonderful chance to examine a historical artefact and Alder Class had some thoughtful insights and questions during our lesson.
