Pupil Leadership

Leadership is about the art of motivating, influencing, and directing people so that they work together to achieve the goals of the team as a whole. It’s important for our pupils to experience leadership opportunities during their time at Churchill, to learn the art of building relationships with others; taking responsibility and being accountable for their own actions and decisions; learning to plan and organise; and finding ways to achieve tasks effectively. Leadership opportunities also provide an opportunity to learn to identify and display effective communication and interpersonal skills.

In school, we have a range of responsibilities which increase as children move through the school. Our Year 1 children take on the responsibility of being a mini-buddy for their new reception friends from September - a role they take very seriously and enjoy enormously.

As they move up through the school, class roles become more important, with children taking on responsibility for collecting and returning registers, organising fruit and milk for their class' break times, collecting in books etc.

Towards to the top of the school children have the opportunity to plan and lead clubs for younger children. These take place with an adult providing supervision and support, but are independently organised and led by pupils. Other pupils will participate in School Parliament, representing the views of their peers and helping to make the school a better place to learn for everyone. Year 5 help us by running our school library and children from Years 5 and 6 are peer mediators, supporting their peers to resolve differences positively.

Our Year 6 children have the greatest levels of responsibility. They take on roles across the school, many of which make a significant difference to how smoothly Churchill runs. They are ambassadors who show around visitors; House and Vice House captains and Sports Captains who run house meetings and organise sports teams for their houses; Prefects who help look after different classes; and our Head Girl and Boy and Deputy Head Girl and Boy who take on a more public role at certain points in the year and set an example for other pupils.
