Welcome Back

Welcome to Sycamore Class. We are a class of Year 6 children and our class teacher is Miss Ahmed.


 It has been a wonderful start to the year, getting to know our new classes and watching everyone settle in.


Throughout the year, reading will be a priority as it is fundamental to learning: your child is welcome to take a reading book from school, but please also ensure that your child has access to a wide range of reading material at home. Children love to read to an adult and the benefits in terms of improvement in their reading ability will be immense by the end of the year. On that note, if you are already DBS checked and would like to come in and hear children read, any help is always gratefully received. Please record when you have listened to your child read in their reading records. Once they have had their record signed 20 times, they will receive a stamp in their achievement books. We have provided a list of questions which can be used to develop children’s comprehension skills, which can use be found on the website.


In English this term we will be using text “The Man Who Walked Between Two Towers” by Mordicai Gerstein. We are focusing on developing the children’s writing to write for different purposes, as well as using more advanced grammar and literary techniques.


Children will continue to be taught spelling explicitly in daily spelling lessons, however they are also expected to learn the common exception words at home. Your child’s teacher will send home each term a highlighted list of words that your child still needs to learn. These words come from the National Curriculum expectations for each year-group. These will be tested monthly to make sure that they are improving and making progress with their spelling. Please ensure you practise these at home.


In Maths, we have lots of new concepts to learn and expand upon. This first term will focus on place value before moving onto addition and subtraction. Year 6 are expected to understand place value using numbers up to 10 million. In Key Stage 2, it is important that your child is fluent with their times tables facts therefore we will be having times tables tests weekly to ensure that the children are able to rapidly recall their multiplication facts and related division facts. Children need to be able rapidly recite up to 12 times tables, as these are used in many key areas of Maths.


Foundation subjects will be taught using The Cornerstones Curriculum, which is a coherent, skills and knowledge-based curriculum with a creative edge. The curriculum nurtures engagement and innovation, bringing learning to life in meaningful ways, therefore offering a fun and engaging learning experience. Our first cross curricular topic is called “Hola, Mexico!” Art, History, Geography, Music, Science and DT are linked to our topic work where appropriate. All topics are designed to incorporate many links to the National Curriculum in a fun and exciting way.


Homework will be set on a weekly basis every Thursday. Children will have until the following Tuesday to complete the weekly MyMaths, as well as a reading comprehension or a Topic- based activity. Homework is always related to concepts that have been introduced and covered in class and should be a means of embedding, assessing and challenging your child’s understanding. However, should your child have any difficulty, please encourage them to tell us and we will happily spend time with them clarifying their understanding. If you are unable to access MyMaths for whatever reason, it is the responsibility of your child to tell their teacher so that they can be provided with a paper copy in order to submit their homework by the deadline.


Also, for your information, PE will be on Wednesday and swimming on a Monday. Make sure that your child has appropriate clothing for all weathers and that their kit remains in school during term-time.
