Welcome to Elm Class
A warm welcome back to you all. The curriculum for Years 1 and 2 is jam-packed, fun and exciting and I hope the children will enjoy this year immensely.
Throughout the year, reading will be a priority as it is fundamental to learning: reading books will be changed weekly but please ensure that your child has access to a wide range of reading material at home. Children love to read to an adult and the benefits in terms of improvement in their reading ability will be immense by the end of the year. On that note, if you are already CRB checked and would like to come in and hear children read, any help is always gratefully received. To support your child’s reading and spelling fluency, phonics will continue to be taught on a daily basis throughout KS1.
In English this term we will be using text Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty as our writing stimuli. We will focus on embedding basic punctuation, using connectives to start sentences and conjunctions to extend them; in addition to introducing and using higher level punctuation and language. We will continue to write in a joined cursive script to ensure they are confident and independent writers by the end of the year.
In Maths, we have lots of new concepts to learn and expand upon. We will be developing and consolidating our existing understanding of place value; addition and subtraction multiplication and division; and focus on different visual and written methods to achieve this. In class, children will benefit from a range of practical resources to support and expend their understanding of counting, the number system and maths concepts in general.
Foundation subjects will be taught using The Cornerstones Curriculum, which is a coherent, skills and knowledge-based curriculum with a creative edge. The curriculum nurtures engagement and innovation, bringing learning to life in meaningful ways, therefore offering a fun and engaging learning experience. Our first topic will be Dinosaur Planet!
Homework will be set on a weekly basis every Friday. Children will have until the following Wednesday to complete the Maths, English and Topic- based activities included. Homework is always related to concepts that have been introduced and covered in class and should be a means of embedding, assessing and challenging your child’s understanding. However, should your child have any difficulty, please encourage them to tell us and we will happily spend time with them clarifying their understanding.
Also, for your information, PE will be on a Monday and Thursday. One of these lessons will be outside so please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing.
Mr P Jones.
